Check all gold with magnet. This is done because all gold contains alot of metal. IF a piece of GOLD gets picked up by our magnet, we give it back to the owner. All gold contains metal and even though a piece could be marked for either 10K, 14K, 18K or higher it could have more metal than actual gold.
Check For Markings: We take each piece and check to see what it is tagged as. Again, a piece could be tagged 14K but not test for 14K, it might test for 10K. "Mistakenly tagging" was a common practice years ago by jewelers, today I don't this this happens that much.
Acid Test: I will always start with the highest tagged pieces first. I will take all the 18K Gold (or higher) and test those pieces. If the piece of gold passes the acid test it goes into my bucket. I do the same for each level of gold. One by One. Some pieces are not tagged at all and these will be tested for the 14K first and if it fails the 14K test I will re-test for 10K.
Remove Stones: I will always try to remove any and all stones and return them to the owner. But there are some pieces that are OGCG (Only God Could Get) and at that point it is up to the owner if they want the piece back or sell with the stones still in. Class rings are a big culprit, I can not remove those stones, in fact I am not sure anyone can.
Weighing: Once all the jewelry has passed the acid tests the pieces that go into my bucket get weighed: 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, and 24K all get weighed separately. We weigh on the Penny weight and depending on the market value for that day will determine what you will get paid.
Fork up the dough: Not much to tell here: I pay you handsomely and you leave happy!!
